It’s been a unfortunate year for Islam Makhachev thus far, but it’s about to get better. KHK MMA’s professional fighter from Dagestan, who holds a record of 12 wins and 1 loss, has been given a date and an opponent after a long, hard wait.
KHK MMA’s 24-year-old Lightweight prospect suffered his first professional defeat at UFC 192 in October and has been itching to get back into the cage to erase that memory.
Now he can do just that, as he will fight on UFC Fight Night 94, September 17th, against the talented Chris Wade (11-2) in what will be a battle of the maulers.
The fight will be on the undercard of Dustin Poirier’s fight with Michael Johnson in a big main event with title implications in the lightweight division.
Makhachev has excellent wrestling, but that also happens to be Wade’s strongest point and his style is very simple; he will pressure his opponent , take him down and maul him from above – much like Makhachev.
Their similarities don’t end there – they are both coming off a defeat and this fight is a must-win situation with the winner likely putting themselves in the top 10, and the loser likely drifting into obscurity. It’s a crossroads fight.
Makhachev suffered huge disappointment in April when he was pulled from his fight with Drew Dober, following a positive test result for a banned substance called Meldonium, which was only just added to the banned substances list at the beginning of the year.
After a thorough review of his case, USADA concluded that the extremely low meldonium concentration in Makhachev’s test result was due to ingestion prior to the substance being officially banned in 2016. Makhachev can now compete and will not face any complications related to that issue.
Makhachev was coming off a tough TKO defeat to Adriano Martins last October, and now a year later he finally gets his chance for redemption against a dangerous opponent with similar ambitions.
This will be an excellent blueprint for Makhachev, who will be confident in his ability to out-muscle the American.
Islam’s return will take place at the State Farm Arena, in Texas. KHK MMA will be present on the biggest platform of Mixed Martial Arts again!
