In an action filled fight night, Jose “Shorty” Torres claimed the Titan FC Interim Flyweight belt as he dominated Abdiel Velazquez and knocked him out cold with a blasting knee at the end of the second round.
The flyweight interim title bout was the co-main event of Titan FC 40, which took place Friday August 5th, 2016 at Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The card streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.
KHK MMA’s Torres incredibly came out as the underdog in this fight, and in the early going he landed a chopping leg kick to get the fight started. Velasquez in his southpaw stance landed a solid straight left to the stalking Torres, but it didn’t deter the Chicago man, who was on a mission. He pressured Velazquez, but The Nightmare was landing some counters and landed a hard head kick from the outside which drew screams of delight from his corner. They would be short-lived.
Torres continued to press and back Velazquez into the cage, threw a leg kick and clipped The Nightmare with a right hand which rocked him as he shot for a panic takedown, failed, took a knee to the body and landed a nice left hook as they broke away. The most dangerous place was clearly the cage for Velasquez, but Torres cut off the ring and once again, leading with a leg kick, launched a combination attack with a right hand then a knee in the clinch. Velazquez shot for another desperate takedown, landed it for about two seconds and Torres sprung back up. Momentum was firmly with Shorty, who was finding a home for the right hand over The Nightmare’s lazy guard. All of a sudden with a minute to go, Torres turned it up, sensed a weakness, and pounced like a tiger upon Velazquez, charging inside and tossing him down with a text book Judo trip. Torres maintained his tight body lock as Velasquez struggled to his feet and was ruthlessly slammed to the ground in a monstrous belly to back toss. Torres had his back and straightened out Velazquez, preparing to rain down bombs upon The Nightmare, who suddenly found himself in a nightmare scenario. Unable to move, Torres mounted on his back, punches coming down from all angles like a horrible hail storm. Around 20 unanswered punches later Torres attempted a choke as the bell saved Velasquez from certain defeat.
Torres was sporting a cut above his right eye, but he was firmly in the ascendency and The Nightmare looked shell-shocked in his corner. Torres came out calm and collected, cutting off the ring in pursuit. Velazquez was very much on the run, looking to land pot-shot counters which as single shots were never going to deter Shorty. Torres landed some hard inside legs kicks as he calmly pursued his fading foe. Torres pressed him against the cage, and landed a telling left hook, which he followed up with a knee in the clinch, doubling-up Velazquez. Torres stalked and every kick he landed was potent and with purpose, and as Velazquez dared to throw an attack of his own, Torres seized the opening, landed a counter left hook, which staggered Velazquez and Torres then landed a perfect knee to his chin as he was falling which turned out his lights. After three professional fights Jose Torres was the Titan FC Interim World Champion.
After the fight Torres dedicated the win to his brother who was in attendance, and had recently survived a near fatal incident.
An amazing yet expected performance from “ Shorty “ who will bring the first Belt to the KHK MMA family, and once again cementing our team as a solid force in the MMA world.
